6. Preventing Malware
If you have a PC, then you absolutely must have good Internet Security software.
This will protect you computer from damage to it’s own software (which can render your PC unusable) and such things as spyware (which can collect any information you place on your PC). Please also see How to “Be Safe on the Internet”.
New PC’s, and some refurbished PC’s, with a Microsoft operating system will have there own Internet Security software. Older machines may have Mcafee installed. I would not recommend it myself. I’ve never had a problem with Norton, and Kapersky comes well recommended.
Kapersky will charge about £25 a year to licence one PC. Norton will charge about £45 a year to licence 3 PC’s. You can sometimes get a good deal on an installation package but the full price will be applied for the following year’s subscription.
If you are changing from one brand to another, make sure you use appropriate software removal software. For the same purpose and just in case your PC already has malware installed, always run the installation from a purchased disk and use it to perform a scan first.
